Nicola Sturgeon reveals Hamilton Accies positive Covid player tests won't impact on fan return plan

Nicola Sturgeon today confirmed three positive coronavirus tests at Hamilton Accies will not impact on the return of fans to grounds.

The shock news out of New Douglas Park saw first-team and academy training cancelled today.

The Accies trio "will now self-isolate in line with Scottish Government and Joint Response Group guidelines for 10 days", the club confirmed.

The First Minister says the results show that Covid testing is working well in Scottish football.

When asked about the return of fans being impacted by the Accies news, she said: "I wouldn't say having some positive cases, which is a sign that the regime in football is working to identify and isolate cases, would be a deciding factor in the overall situation."

Test events for Aberdeen v Kilmarnock and Celtic's trip to Ross County were allowed for 300 season ticket holders last weekend.

The Dons had hoped to welcome 750 fans to Pittodrie against Motherwell but the request has been knocked back.

National Clinical Director Jason Leitch added that he said rule breaches would concern him but not positive tests.

He added: "I agree with the First Minister in what we will advise here when it comes to having crowds in stadia, whether that be football, rugby or any other sport.

"Individual players getting positive cases through no rule breaches doesn't seem to me to affect that trajectory, what does is increased prevalence of the virus in the community. That definitely affects that trajectory and we will have to be very, very careful.

"The other thing is the quality of the test events. We are expecting a report on these this week, I think tomorrow, but my early indications are they went very well."
