Nicola Sturgeon responds as Joe Biden beats Trump to win US election

First Minister Nicola Sturgeon has responded to the news that Joe Biden has beaten Donald Trump to become the next president of the United States.

The Democrat gained the most votes in formerly Republican state Pennsylvania, putting him over the 270 electoral votes needed to win the election.

Scotland's First Minister took to social media to congratulate Joe Biden and Vice President Harris, penning: "Congratulations from Scotland to President-Elect Joe Biden and to history-making Vice President-Elect Kamala Harris.

Nicola Sturgeon added: "The first woman in the White House - and the first woman of colour too.

"This is a big and special moment."

Deputy First Minister John Swinney also responded to the news, writing: "Warmest congratulations from Scotland to Joe Biden and Kamala Harris on their historic and welcome victory.

"A triumph for decency, compassion and integrity.

In a statement, Joe Biden said: "America, I’m honoured that you have chosen me to lead our great country.

"The work ahead of us will be hard, but I promise you this: I will be a President for all Americans — whether you voted for me or not. I will keep the faith that you have placed in me."
