Nicola Sturgeon renews plea for Old Firm fans to stay at home during match

Nicola Sturgeon has renewed her plea for Old Firm fans to stay at home during tomorrow’s Rangers vs Celtic clash.

At her daily briefing the First Minister asked people not to gather in each others homes, outside stadiums or to travel across the border to see the match in pubs in England.

She said: “This statement is possibly a controversial one, I readily acknowledge that, but I’m afraid of watching football, no matter how essential it might seem, to some does not fall into the essential category.”

Sturgeon said: “You mustn’t go round somebody else’s house to watch the match.

“None of us, not just football supporters, but none of us should be going into each other’s homes at the moment unless for essential properties, such as childcare or looking after a vulnerable person.”

“In addition, people should not be gathering outside, or around the stadium, there will be nothing to see there, so there is no point at all, in turning up.”

“And finally, please, do not travel, in order to try to watch the match and all, there may be a temptation to try and get a road walk or national restrictions in this way but it is really important that you don’t do that.”

“So please do not travel to other parts of Scotland, or cross the border, just in an attempt to watch the match. It’s really not worth the risk. Nobody likes the fact that these restrictions have to be in place, but do it to protect all of us and keep us safe.”

She said: “Nobody likes the fact that these restrictions have to be in place, but they are vital to protecting all of us and keeping us safe.

“So please comply with restrictions, by doing that you will be playing your part in helping us get the virus under control and you’ll be helping hasten the day when we can all watch and enjoy the things that we love doing whether that’s football or the many things that we find ourselves not able to do normally.”
