Nicola Sturgeon reelected as First Minister for another term by MSPs

Nicola Sturgeon has been officially reelected by MSPs for another term as First Minister.

The SNP leader saw off rival bids from Lib Dem Willie Rennie and Scottish Conservative leader Douglas Ross to win the most votes at Holyrood today.

Making her pitch to take on the top job in Scottish politics for another term, Sturgeon said her "first and driving priority" was to lead Scotland through the pandemic and into recovery for the economy, the health service and society.

"We know this crisis is not over as the current situation in Moray and in Glasgow reminds us very starkly," she said.

She added that being First Minister was "an immense privilege, but also an enormous responsibility and an enormous duty".

Sturgeon concluded: "I am ready to get on with the job of leading this country to brighter and better times."

She also quipped that given Douglas Ross did not express his desire to be first minister in the campaign, his standing today could be viewed as a "heroic change of heart".

The SNP leader received 64 votes - easily outpacing the 31 won by Douglas Ross and four for Willie Rennie. There were 28 abstentions.

Earlier, Lib Dem leader Rennie had told MSPs that "most people didn't vote for the largest party so it's important their voices are heard".

He branded Boris Johnson and the Conservatives "the biggest threat to the Union".

Ross said Scots want to see the Parliament "pulling together not apart" over the next five years.

He added: "I know there is literally more chance of one of my cows fulfilling the nursery rhyme of jumping over the moon than there is of me winning this vote today, but that doesn't mean we can't try."
