Nicola Sturgeon Rangers row warning as Scottish football to get 'its house in order' amid covid breach

Nicola Sturgeon has called on Scottish football to get "its house in order" amid another row over players breaching lockdown rules.

The First Minister was asked today whether she would issue a red card to clubs after several Rangers players were reportedly caught at a house party over the weekend.

Elite sport is allowed to continue under lockdown, with players and staff regularly tested at their club's expense.

But all players are expected to abide the same lockdown rules as everyone else when off the pitch.

"Sometimes it takes all my power not to stand here and use expletives whenever I get asked about football," Sturgeon said.

"I've not been given all the details yet of the Rangers incident yet. I know the club has said it is investigating. But let me be clear - whenever football rears its head in this situation, I get emails from people suggesting I am partial in favour of one team or the other.

"That's not true. I don't care what club is breaching the rules. If you're breaching the rules, you're in the wrong.

"It's really frustrating. It's also unfair to the majority of people in the country who don't have the privileges that elite sports people have right now."

The SNP leader continued: "So I can say to football, and say to sport generally, please make sure your house is in order."

The Ibrox side confirmed last night that an internal probe is ongoing after claims members of the first team squad attended a gathering in Glasgow following a match against Kilmarnock on Saturday.

The club put out a short statement via Twitter at around 9pm confirming they were “aware of an alleged incident”.

Rumours were rife across social media that at least two players - and possibly up to four - had breached lockdown rules.

The players were alleged to have attended a party on Saturday night where officers dished out fines.

A Police Scotland spokesman confirmed they attended an incident where breaches were discovered.

The spokesman added: “We have received reports of a gathering at a property in Hayburn Lane, Glasgow, at 1.10am on Sunday, February 14.

“Officers attended and those in attendance left. Ten people were issued with fixed penalty notices for breaching coronavirus regulations.”

The club statement said: “Rangers are aware of an alleged incident which is subject to an internal investigation. We will make no further comment.”
