Nicola Sturgeon questions if Boris Johnson 'glib comments' on human life make him fit for office

Nicola Sturgeon has said no leader “should be glib about human life” as she reacted to claims Boris Johnson would have rather seen over-80s die than impose a second lockdown last October.

The First Minister took a sideswipe at the Tory Prime Minister as she fielded questions over claims Johnson was reluctant to tighten lockdown last autumn because he thought people dying were “essentially all over 80”.

Asked about the claims by Johnson’s vengeful former aide Dominic Cummings the SNP leader said all human life should be valued.

She said: “Certainly nobody in a position like mine or Boris Johnson’s should be glib or complacent about human life, whether that’s the human life of a child, a young adult or an older adult - human life is human life “

“As decision makers, I think it has been a heavy responsibility and all of our shoulders to try to take decisions that we recognise cannot save every person from this virus but minimises the impact of it.”

“I think any leader who doesn’t take that seriously...should be asking themselves questions about whether they are fit for office.”

Sturgeon added that Cummings’ account could not be taken “as gospel” but that everyone knew Johnson “appeared to be reluctant to impose new restrictions” last Autumn.
