Nicola Sturgeon permits Scottish football crowd return as SPFL clubs get green light for full houses

Scottish clubs have been handed a huge boost as the green light is given for the return of maximum capacities.

Premiership clubs moved forward their winter break after first minister Nicola Sturgeon's decision to limit crowds to 500 fans.

Championship, League One and League Two clubs have persevered with the restrictions but will also now get their reprieve.

Restrictions will be lifted from next Monday, the day the Premiership returns with Celtic host Hibs at Parkhead.

Next Tuesday's scheduled Premiership games will also be allowed to host full houses - including Motherwell's trip to Ross County.

The first minister said in a statement: "I can confirm that the attendance limit of 500 at large scale outdoor events will be lifted from Monday, January 17.

"That means for example spectators will be permitted again at major outdoor sporting events including football fixtures scheduled for early next week.

"The Covid certification scheme will remain in place for these and other events and venues previously covered but with two important changes.

"Firstly, our guidance will now stipulate the organisers of large events of 1000 or more people should check the certification status of at least 50 per cent of attendees rather than the current 20 per cent or at least 100 people - whichever figure is highest.

"Second, from Monday the requirement to be fully vaccinated for purposes of Covid certification will include having a booster if the second dose was more than four months ago."

The news will disappoint those in the Championship and below to some extent though with games still taking place this weekend.
