Nicola Sturgeon passes on job as 'barefoot bookseller' on luxury Maldives island

Nicola Sturgeon has passed on an opportunity to work as a bookseller on a luxury island in the Maldives to continue on in the ‘best job’.

The First Minister shared a link on social media to news of a position going as a ‘barefoot bookseller’ at the Soneva Fushi Resort on the private Kunfunadhoo island.

Successful applicants will be tasked with running a pop-up beachfront bookshop while staying at the five-star destination for six months.

Sturgeon, who is a self-confessed bookworm, came close to joining thousands of people in throwing their hat into the ring for the coveted position.

Sturgeon tweeted in response to a position that has opened up on the Soneva Fushi resort in the Maldives (Facebook)

The 50-year-old admitted that she already has the ‘best job’ - but didn’t completely rule it out in the future.

Tweeting on Thursday evening, the First Minister said: “Obviously I already have the best job (!) but, you know, as second choices go…”

The private island has already played host to three barefoot booksellers since the pop-up first started in December 2018.

With a high-profile name like Nicola Sturgeon out of the running, Scots now have a better chance of taking their place as the island's fourth bookseller.

Candidates should have a proven experience in publishing or bookselling.

They must also be passionate about reading, be an excellent communicator and love writing.

All of these skills will be needed for when you take to @barefootbookseller Instagram page.

The lucky person will have pre-departure training, which will be carried out later this year, before being whisked off to the Maldives from October to Easter.

Information on applying for this dream role can be found here.
