Nicola Sturgeon 'overwhelmed' on 50th birthday with cards and flowers

Nicola Sturgeon has been inundated with cards, flowers and best wishes on her 50th birthday.

The First Minister says overwhelmed is an understatement as she thanked well wishers on her big day.

Posting on Twitter this morning she said: "To say I’m overwhelmed by all the cards, flowers and good wishes I have received from across the country for my (ahem) 50th birthday, would be an understatement.

"I just wanted to pop on here briefly (before hopefully staying away for the rest of the day) to say thank you."

Born in Irvine Central Hospital on July 19, 1970, she's the eldest of Joan and Robin Sturgeon's three daughters.

Raised in Ayrshire, she attended Dreghorn Primary and Greenwood Academy, before going on to study law at the University of Glasgow.

She is Scotland's first female First Minister and the first woman to lead the Scottish National Party.

Just last week she shared a sweet throwback picture of wedding day to husband Peter Murrell on their 10th annversary.
