Nicola Sturgeon makes face coverings compulsory in shops across Scotland

Shoppers will have to wear face coverings in Scotland from next week.

Nicola Sturgeon made the announcement at her daily briefing today.

The move comes just days after shops opened for the first time in months, and weeks after they became compulsory on public transport.

The new rule comes into force when the third phase of lockdown easing starts on Friday, July 10.

However, the First Minister urged the public not to wait, but start wearing face coverings immediately.

She said: "Please don’t wait until then. Get into the habit now. This is a good way to help protect each other.”

And she also relaxed the two metre social distancing rule slightly for some businesses, but warned they'll need to justify it and take exceptional health and safety precautions.

She also removed it for children under 12, to let them play together in small groups of no more than eight, from three households and always outdoors.

Twelve to 17-year-olds will have to stick with the current two metre rule for a while yet, Ms Sturgeon explained.

She further stressed that the current physical distancing law remains in force in all other circumstances, including beer gardens where the restart date was confirmed for this Monday, July 6.
