Nicola Sturgeon looking into ways kids' parties could be exempt from new 6 person rule

Children and young people could be totally exempted from the new six person rule introduced yesterday, Nicola Sturgeon has said.

The First Minister said she had been asked why children and young people could mix with others from more than two households at school but not elsewhere.

In response, Nicola Sturgeon said the government were looking at ways all children and young people could be exempt form the limit on social gatherings which bans groups of over six people from more than two different households gathering .

The new rules was announced yesterday to curb the spread of coronavirus after a surge in new cases recently.

It would potentially allow things like kids' parties to go ahead as well as other out of school social gatherings amongst young people.

The First Minister said: "I have asked for some additional expert advice to see that if in some circumstances we could exempt children from the two household rule as well so that, for example, children's birthday parties could go ahead even on a limited basis as long as adults comply with the limits."

Sturgeon said she hopes to clarify this early next week.

She admitted a young person she know personally had been in touch to "forcefully" why she can be with her friends at school all day, but not after school.

The First Minister added that it was a "reasonable question".

The rules announced in the Scottish Parliament yesterday already meant children under 12 who are part of two households would not count towards the limit.
