Nicola Sturgeon lockdown update today as cabinet consider further restrictions

Nicola Sturgeon will convene a meeting of the Scottish cabinet on Tuesday to consider if any new measures are needed to tackle the Covid pandemic.

The First Minister has already said services like click and collect shopping, takeaways and the construction industry could be restricted.

The move comes amid concerns that the number of people in hospital with Covid-19 is higher than at the height of the pandemic last spring.

Jason Leitch, the national clinical director, said Scottish hospitals do have spare capacity to deal with the virus but if cases rise it could result in some operations being cancelled.

Speaking on the BBC Scotland, he said: “We’ve got 13,000 beds in the country was plenty spare, but if you allocate all that to  covid it means you cannot do other things.

"So cataract operations and hip replacements, perhaps even some cancer operations which we desperately want to do, and we don’t want to have to cancel.”

Professor Leitch added: "We’re not at that stage yet, but we’ve already allocated over 1500 beds to COVID. If that keeps rising, because the prevalence keeps rising, then other stuff has to be given up.”

The Metropolitan Police Commissioner Dan Cressida Dick has warned coronavirus rule breakers in England that they are increasingly likely to be fined for breaching rules

She said it is preposterous that anyone could be unaware of the need to follow lockdown measures and her warning is likely to be followed by police forces across the UK.

On the high street Salisbury’s is deploying security guards at the front its stores to ensure that customers comply with mask rules while doing their shopping while Morrisons is demanding that all customers wear facemasks unless they are exempt.
