Nicola Sturgeon 'likely' to hold covid update as fears grow over Omicron variant in Scotland

Nicola Sturgeon is set to hold a coronavirus press conference on Friday as cases of the Omicron variant continue to rise across Scotland.

The First Minister is expected to address the nation on the latest situation regarding the pandemic from St Andrew's House in Edinburgh.

Sturgeon issued an update to the Scottish Parliament earlier this week where she revealed that cases of the new strain, which was first identified in southern Africa, had increased ten fold.

A spokesperson for the First Minister was asked if a briefing would be held tomorrow.

They said: “That’s not confirmed yet, but I think it’s likely that she’ll be leading a press briefing tomorrow at St Andrew’s House.”

A time for the briefing hasn't been released by the Scottish Government.

It comes as. Scotland has recorded one new case of the Omicron coronavirus variant in the past 24 hours, taking the overall number to 109.

However, the Scottish Government warned this was a "relatively lower number of confirmed cases" due to a change in reporting which comes with a two-day lag due to "additional quality control and processing".

The government also warned of issues over the daily overall case numbers due to processing issues at labs, resulting in delays between specimens being taken and results received and reported.

The figures published by the Scottish Government show there were 16 coronavirus deaths and 3,196 cases recorded in the past 24 hours.

The Covid-19 death toll in Scotland under the daily measure - of people who first tested positive for the virus within the previous 28 days - now stands at 9,688.

The daily test positivity rate was 8.0%, down from 8.1% the previous day.

There were 578 people in hospital on Tuesday with recently confirmed Covid-19, down four on the day before, with 39 in intensive care, down three.

A total of 4,358,725 people have received their first dose of a Covid-19 vaccination, 3,967,477 have received their second dose, and 2,000,915 have received a third dose or booster.
