Nicola Sturgeon 'likely' to give urgent Covid update as Omicron cases soar

Nicola Sturgeon is 'likely' to hold a press conference on Friday (December 9) as Omicron coronavirus cases rise rapidly.

The First Minister had given an update in the Scottish Parliament earlier this week, however it is reported that she will address the nation again in a press briefing.

Expected to take place at St Andrew's House, a spokesperson for the First Minister said it "was likely" further information would be given on Friday.

They said: “That’s not confirmed yet, but I think it’s likely that she’ll be leading a press briefing tomorrow at St Andrew’s House.”

According to the Record, a time for the briefing has not yet been released by the Scottish Government.

It comes as. Scotland has recorded one new case of the Omicron coronavirus variant in the past 24 hours, taking the overall number to 109.

However, the Scottish Government warned this was a "relatively lower number of confirmed cases" due to a change in reporting which comes with a two-day lag due to "additional quality control and processing".

The government also warned of issues over the daily overall case numbers due to processing issues at labs, resulting in delays between specimens being taken and results received and reported.

Public Health Scotland have also issued urgent guidance for people to postpone their Christmas parties, after revealing that a number of Omicron cases have been linked to such events.

3,196 new coronavirus cases were reported in Scotland as a whole, with 529 of these being registered in the NHS Lothian health board area.

16 deaths were also registered in the last 24 hours.
