Nicola Sturgeon lights candle in tribute to Sarah Everard and victims of male violence

Nicola Sturgeon has lit a candle at her home in memory of Sarah Everard and victims of male violence.

The First Minister joined thousands across Scotland in paying tribute to the 33-year-old marketing executive, who was found dead in London earlier this week.

Scots shared their experiences of male violence across social media following news of the discovery of Sarah’s body - with many taking to the streets to pay their respects today.

The SNP leader posted a picture of a candle lit by the window of her home earlier this evening in her own tribute.

Sturgeon wrote on Twitter: “For Sarah, and all the others #ReclaimTheStreets.”

People across the country joined a series of ‘ Reclaim These Streets ’ events in honour of Sarah today.

Dozens of ribbons were pictured at a number of landmarks across Scotland in a bid to highlight the issues of women’s safety on the streets.

A vigil has also been held online after police and Government officials raised safety concerns over an in-person gathering amid coronavirus pandemic.

Serving police officer Wayne Couzens was arrested and charged in connection with the death of the 33-year-old woman.

The 48-year-old appeared in court for the first time earlier today as he faces charges of kidnap and murder.

Sarah’s family released an heartbreaking statement after police discovered her body this week.

They said: "Sarah was bright and beautiful - a wonderful daughter and sister.

"She was kind and thoughtful, caring and dependable. She always put others first and had the most amazing sense of humour.”
