Nicola Sturgeon leads celebrations after Scotland’s stunning rugby win over England

Nicola Sturgeon led the celebrations today after Scotland’s stunning rugby win over England.

The First Minister tweeted a photo of the Calcutta Cup saying it was now “coming home.”

She added her “massive congratulations” and described the performance as a “truly historic win.”

The national team had earlier claimed their first win at Twickenham since 1983.

Hero fly-half Finn Russell orchestrated the shock 11-6 Six Nations victory over England.

He capitalised on the hosts' poor discipline to give Scotland a three-point lead before helping to set up Duhan van Der Merwe's try.

Earlier in the day Sturgeon tweeted a photo from three years ago showing her drinking from the Calcutta Cup.

She wrote: “A very special memory from three years ago - my post-match visit to the BT Murrayfield dressing room to congratulate the Scotland Team on a famous win.

“Still not entirely sure what was in the Calcutta Cup - but it tasted good!

“Wishing the team the best of luck today.”

Defending six-nations champions England had been favourites to win the tournament.

But it is not now likely to last with France opening their campaign with a 50-10 defeat of Italy in Rome.

Scotland face Wales at Murrayfield next weekend.
