Nicola Sturgeon jumps to defence of BBC star after 'wee Jimmy Krankie' post sends Twitter into meltdown

Nicola Sturgeon has defended Janice Forsyth after the BBC Broadcaster was accused of calling the First Minister Jimmy Krankie.

Janice became embroiled in the political row after the Bloody Scotland book festival asked people online who they thought would be joining author Ian Rankin on stage this year.

Janice suggested on Twitter : “Wee Jimmy Krankie of course.”

Less than twenty four hours later it was announced that Nicola Sturgeon would be joining the Rebus author on stage.

Janice Forsyth's Jimmy Krankie post caused quite the stir over Twitter (Twitter)

Some independence supporting Twitter users were up in arms at the 'Krankie' comment including Easy Coast Indy who said: “Hardly behaviour befitting a national radio presenter.”

Jay Mac Yes added: “I'm so glad I haven't given your organisation a brass farthing for 5 years and I never will again. Ram your licence fee up your chocolate spider.”

Many more gave Janice abuse online for berating Nicola by allegedly comparing her to the comedy character and Janice felt the need  to clarify her comment.

She said: “Jeezo! I was not referring to Nicola Sturgeon . You’ve jumped to the wrong conclusion and you know nothing about my political views. Take pause before leaping on social media to make accusations.”

After seeing the abuse that Janice was receiving, the First Minister jumped online to defend her.

Nicola wrote: “Please, folks, Leave Janice Forsyth alone! She wasn’t referring to me... I’m also one of her biggest fans!”

Muriel Gray and Jude McLafferty also jumped to her defence.

And actor Iain Robertson said: “Seeing folk pile on Janice Forsyth is shameful. She very clearly wasn’t talking about the FM & I know she wouldn’t make a joke like that - because Janice’s patter isn’t honking.”

Collaborator Byroness Cybernat was amongst those who apologised saying: “Sorry boss!!! Being overprotective!! Sorry, Janice.”
