Nicola Sturgeon issues Glasgow update as city to remain in Level Three lockdown

Nicola Sturgeon has announced Glasgow will remain in Level Three lockdown as cases remain high in the city.

The First Minister made the announcement during a daily briefing from St Andrew's House in Edinburgh where she was joined by National Clinical Director Jason Leitch.

Glasgow has been in Level Three for a number of weeks after cases started to creep up in some parts for the city.

The south side of Glasgow has been an area badly hit by the rise in cases over the last month.

The Scottish Government has increased testing in the G41 and G42 postal areas in a bid to stop the spread of the deadly virus which has killed more than 7,000 Scots over the last year.

Vaccines have also be ramped up in an attempt to prevent further hospitalisations in the area.

Sturgeon said the measures taken so far in the city have helped to stabilise the number of cases.

If cases continue to stabilise then Glasgow could move down to Level Two from next Saturday. The Scottish Government will give a decision on whether to move the city down on Wednesday.

The rest of mainland Scotland will remain at Level Two with some of the island communities staying at Level One.

Sturgeon said: "The view of the national incident management team is two-fold. Firstly, that it would be premature to move Glasgow out of Level 3 immediately this week while the situation remains so fragile.

"However, and secondly, if incidence continues to stabilise and assuming levels of hospitalisation remain reasonably stable, the incident management team has made clear to me that they would support a move to Level 2 from the end of next week.

"My message to the people of Glasgow is don't lose heart.

"On the contrary, take heart from the progress that we are seeing.

"I live in Glasgow so I know how hard this is from my own personal life, but please continue to help with all of the public health efforts that are in place because if we continue to do this then we will make that move down from Level 3 to Level 2, and then after that hopefully get back on track and down the levels further."
