Nicola Sturgeon invites Boris Johnson to face-to-face meeting in Edinburgh this week

Nicola Sturgeon has invited Boris Johnson for a face-to-face meeting for the first time since the covid pandemic hit last year.

The First Minister has written to the Tory Prime Minister asking if he wants to discuss coronavirus and recovery from the pandemic at Bute House in Edinburgh.

It's believed Johnson will head north later this week for just his second visit to Scotland this year.

She tweeted: "I understand the PM will visit Scotland later this week.

"Since this would be our first opportunity to meet in person for a while, I’ve invited him to Bute House to discuss Covid/recovery.

"We differ politically, but our governments must work together where we can."

In the letter, she said the visit "might offer us an opportunity to meet in person in Edinburgh for a discussion on the current Covid situation and our respective plans for recovery - focussing, obviously, on the areas where it is important that our governments work together".

The Prime Minister hasn't visited Scotland since January this year when he toured vaccination programmes across the Central Belt.

Scotland was still in the highest level of covid during his last visit.

He was pencilled in to visit during the Scottish Parliament election, however he decided against it citing covid restrictions.

During his last visit Johnson was asked about the chances of another independence referendum.

He said: "I don’t think that the right thing to do is to talk endlessly about another referendum when I think what the people of the country and the people of Scotland want in particular is to fight this pandemic.

"I don’t see the advantage of getting lost in pointless constitutional wrangling when after all we had a referendum not so very long ago."
