Nicola Sturgeon invited to appear before MPs on Westminster Scottish Affairs Committee

Nicola Sturgeon has been asked to appear in front of MPs in Westminster in what promises to be an “unmissable event”.

The First Minister has been invited to give evidence to the Commons Scottish Affairs Committee on a wide range of issues including how her government gets on with Boris Johnson’s Ministers.

Pete Wishart MP, chair of Scottish Affairs Committee, said the session would shed light on the state of relationships between the two governments in the wake of the covid pandemic.

He said: “ We are inviting the First Minister to appear before our Committee to discuss a number of issues which are also the responsibility of the Scottish Government, such as areas of welfare policy and higher education.”

Her evidence will be invaluable in considering the ongoing work between the UK and Scottish governments, and how this relationship could be strengthened to benefit the Scottish people.”

The SNP MP added: “I look forward to hearing whether the First Minister will accept our invitation, for what will surely be an unmissable event.”

A number of recent inquiries by the Scottish Affairs Committee have offered recommendations to both the UK and Scottish governments on issues ranging from renewable energy to welfare policy.

The invitation follows Welsh First Minister Mark Drakeford’s appearance before the Welsh Affairs Committee earlier this year.

Sturgeon is not a frequent visitor to Westminster, usually attending Joint Ministerial Committee meetings of leaders of devolved governments and the Prime Minister once a year before the covid pandemic, and often combining that with a group meeting of SNP MPs.

A Scottish First Minister has not given evidence to the Scottish Affairs committee before although Jack McConnell has appeared as a former holder of the office.
