Nicola Sturgeon insists she will decide when Scots schools return - not Boris Johnson

Nicola Sturgeon has confirmed that she will decide when Scottish schools reopen their doors - not the UK Government.

The First Minister took to Twitter this morning amid speculation that Westminster officials are ramping up plans to send pupils back to class.

But she insisted those making the decisions north of the border will not be rushed as Scotland plots its exit from coronavirus lockdown.

Echoing a statement from the Welsh Government, which said their own education minister would be taking the decision for that country, Ms Sturgeon said: "Same for Scotland.

"The Scottish Government - in discussion with local authorities - will decide safe timetable for re-opening schools.

"And we will keep pupils, parents and the public properly informed along the way."

It comes as Boris Johnson prepares to outline his plans for entering "phase two" of the lockdown process.

The Prime Minister must officially review the current stay-at-home measures on Thursday.
