Nicola Sturgeon in council meeting u-turn as First Minister agrees to summit after 'snub' claim

Nicola Sturgeon has agreed to meet council leaders after a furious backlash over her Government's plans to fund local authorities.

All 32 council chiefs, including senior SNP politicians, signed a letter to the First Minister before Christmas criticising the proposals.

They accused the Government of planning a £371m real terms cut for town hall budgets and urged a rethink.

Some leaders were further incensed when it appeared they would be offered a meeting with Finance Secretary Kate Forbes, not Sturgeon.

Stephen McCabe, the leader of Inverclyde Council, accused her of a snub.

It has now emerged that Sturgeon has written to senior councillors and agreed to a meeting.

In her letter, she focused on the joint priorities between local and national government, such as social care and childcare.

She added that she would be pleased to meet council umbrella group COSLA and political group leaders.

One local government source said the fact that SNP leaders had signed the original letter to Sturgeon demonstrated the political dangers to the Scottish Government.

The insider said the settlement could leave the SNP vulnerable to political attacks ahead of May’s council elections.
