Nicola Sturgeon in Celtic and Rangers Sky Sports plea as she suggests radical measure to stop gatherings

First Minister Nicola Sturgeon has called on Sky Sports to show Saturday's Celtic vs Rangers game for free to help stop the spread of coronavirus.

With the Premiership match behind closed doors, fans are desperate to watch their heroes in a game that could be critical in deciding the destination of the league title at the end of the season.

The SNP leader has warned fans on both sides of the Glasgow divide of the risks that travelling to a bar in England or another household to watch the game might entail, and instead encouraged supporters to watch the clash between Neil Lennon and Steven Gerrard's sides at home.

And she believes removing the pay barrier for those who cannot afford a Sky package will remove the urge to have large gatherings or take other unnecessary risks.

In Thursday's virtual coronavirus briefing, Sturgeon said: "I rwould encourage Sky Sports this weekend to make the Rangers vs Celtic match free to view for supporters.

"As a small but important contribution that they could make to help keep people safe right now.

"Enabling people to watch the match in the comfort and safety of their own home and reduce the temptation people who don't have access to pay-to-view services might have to go and watch the match somewhere else.

"So if anyone from Sky Sports is listening, I would encourage you to think about making the match free to view this weekend."
