Nicola Sturgeon imposes Scottish travel alert for north west England after spike in coronavirus cases

Scots are being told to avoid visiting a large area of northern England after a spike in coronavirus cases.

The warning against non-essential travel also applies to anyone in affected areas, including Manchester, who had plans to visit Scotland.

First Minister Nicola Sturgeon announced the restrictions in the most significant step back to lockdown since the height of the pandemic in the UK.

Sturgeon said: "I'm grateful to the Prime Minister for the update on the recent developments in the north west of England and all four nations agreed on the importance of sharing localised information as we work together to continue to supress the virus."

Sturgeon added: "We have always been clear that localised flare ups are likely as we continue to suppress the virus but by responding quickly and appropriately we can limit the effect these have on wider transmission.

"I strongly advise anyone planning to travel to areas affected in the north of England, or anyone planning to travel to Scotland from those same areas, to cancel their plans."

The affected areas are:

  • Greater Manchester: City of Manchester, Trafford, Stockport, Oldham, Bury, Wigan, Bolton, Tameside, Rochdale, Salford
  • Lancashire, Blackburn with Darwen, Burnley, Hyndburn, Pendle, Rossendale
  • West Yorkshire: Bradford, Calderdale, Kirklees

Sturgeon announced the move after a meeting if the Scottish Government's resilience committee.

Last night, the UK Govenrment announced new restrictions on mixing between households in the affected areas.

People in the affected areas do not need to return to Scotland early but should be "extra vigilant" by monitoring for symptoms and following all guidance.

The travel warning will raise more questions about the use of the border to enforce restrictions in Scotland which prevent people travelling from England.

The restrictions announced by the UK Government for England affect more than four million people, many of who will have holiday plans to visit Scotland.

They won't be allowed to mix in each other's homes or gardens or in places like pubs and restaurants. It will also be illegal for people from outside of the lockdown area to visit households.

The lockdown was announced just hours before the new rules came into force, with millions saying they felt left in the dark.

The move follows Leicester which was put under a localised lockdown a few weeks ago and is only just easing restrictions. Infections are also being probed by Scottish health officials in Inverclyde.
