Nicola Sturgeon hints at rethink over football stadiums allowing fans next week

First Minister Nicola Sturgeon has hinted that a plan for sport stadiums to reopen next week may be halted over coronavirus safety fears.

She said she would not “preempt” an announcement on the next stage of her routemap strategy, but flagged up she had used phrases like “putting the brakes on”.

The Scottish Premiership season started behind closed doors and September 14 is the indicative date for the limited reopening of stadia.

On Saturday, two “test” matches - Aberdeen v Kilmarnock, and Ross County v Celtic - will be played in front of some spectators.

However, coronavirus infection levels have risen recently and questions have been raised about September 14.

Asked about the issue at her daily briefing, Sturgeon said:

“I’m not going to preempt the announcement I will make in parliament tomorrow, but I have used terms like ‘putting the brakes on’, perhaps not going ahead with things we had hoped to go ahead with, given the evidence we are seeing right now.

“So people can draw a direction of travel from that, but in terms of the detail I am duty bound to set that out to Parliament tomorrow.”
