Nicola Sturgeon gives Scots lockdown rules reminder as country prepares for weekend heatwave

First Minister Nicola Sturgeon has announced the easing of Scotland's lockdown from today.

And with a heatwave hitting Ayrshire through the weekend, the early lifting of restrictions is expected to be tested.

The mercury will tip 23 degrees today - and the public has been given the green light to sunbathe or sit in parks soaking up the rays.

Crucially, for the first time in more than two months, more than one household will also be able to meet up - as long as they stay outdoors and two metres apart.

And Ms Sturgeon took to Twitter this morning to reinforce the rules ahead as they come into forice.

She said: "If you're planning to meet up with another household this weekend, please follow these rules to stay safe:

  • One other household/eight people max
  • Stay two metres apart
  • Don't go indoors
  • Wash your hands often
  • Avoid hard surfaces and clean any you do touch
  • Take care in the sun

It follows the First Minister's admission that she was feeling "a bit nervous" ahead of rules being relaxed.

Officials fear any small rise in the all-important R number could mean a return of tougher restrictions.

But for now, emotional family reunions are set to take place and some businesses such as garden centres are reopening, while sports such as golf, fishing and bowls get underway again.
