Watch Nicola Sturgeon give 'rousing' Brexit speech to huge crowd at Put It To The People march

Nicola Sturgeon flies to London to join thousands for anti-Brexit march has called on Brits to unite during a "rousing" speech at an anti-Brexit demonstration in London.

The First Minister flew to the UK capital this morning to speak at the Put It To The People march, which saw the streets flooded by people demanding the public are given a final say over leaving the EU .

Organisers claim the event was attended by around one million people - saying it was one of the biggest in British history.

In her address in front of thousands of protesters at Parliament Square, Sturgeon called for unity and told EU nationals that they were 'welcome in Scotland, England, Wales and Northern Ireland', according to online reports.

Sturgeon told the crowd: "Scotland, the land where more than 60 per cent voted to remain in the EU, has been ignored. The voice of the 48 per cent who voted to remain across the UK is being ignored.

"And the voice of those who voted to leave but could never have contemplated the mess that Brexit has become - their voice is also being ignored. But today we make our voices heard.

"And what our voices are saying loudly and clearly is this: Put it back to the people."

She also said that Theresa May had pitched "parliament against the people".

"If that is your view, Prime Minister, let the people speak," she said.

Sturgeon accused May of being "in thrall to hardline Brexiteers".

She also called on Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn to back a People's vote.

Tweeting a picture of the stage during her speech, she wrote: "Massive crowds at #PutIttothePeople rally in London today. Good to be there.

Demonstrators wore blue and yellow berets and flew large EU flags above the crowd as the march slowly made its way to Parliament Square.

Placards bore messages urging the Government to "revoke article 50" and for Brexit to be put to the people.

The size of the crowd saw people spill over into the capital's side streets and some underground trains were not stopping at Green Park station.

Social media users commended Sturgeon on her "rousing" speech which called for unity over leaving the EU.

It comes after she posted a picture on board a plane heading to take part in the march.

Before she joined the rally backing a second EU referendum, Sturgeon said: "This is now the moment of maximum opportunity - we need to avoid both the catastrophe of no deal and the damage which would be caused by the Prime Minister's bad deal.

"The EU's decision to postpone things until at least April 12 has opened a window, and those of us who oppose Brexit must seize the chance it offers.

"The House of Commons must now take back control from Theresa May and secure a longer extension to the process, to allow time for a new referendum to be held.

"The Prime Minister and her government have proved completely incapable of delivering on the result of the 2016 vote, which is why it is right that this should now go back to the people."

The rally comes as more than four million people have backed a petition calling for Article 50 to be revoked and for Britain to say in the EU.
