Nicola Sturgeon fears for 'integrity' of US democracy as Donald Trump falsely claims he won

Nicola Sturgeon has said the next hours are 'crucial for US democracy' as millions of votes are counted in a tight presidential race.

The First Minister tweeted this morning as the results came in, adding that she hoped 'we would hear the voices of Republicans who understand the importance of that' in a thinly veiled swipe at Donald Trump who has accused his rival of trying to 'steal' victory.

Incumbent Trump and Democrat challenger Joe Biden are neck and neck with some key states still to declare their votes.

Her message follows from another last night where she wished the people of America 'good luck' as they went to the polls.

This morning she tweeted: "The ‘good luck, America’ sentiment of last night seems even more apposite this morning.

"Crucial hours and days ahead for the integrity of US democracy. Let’s hope we start to hear the voices of Republicans who understand the importance of that."

Trump has been criticised for declaring victory before votes have even been tallied and calling doubt on the electoral processes.

The President tweeted early this morning: "We are up BIG, but they are trying to STEAL the election. We will never let them do it.

"Votes cannot be cast after the polls are closed!"
