Nicola Sturgeon's lockdown lifting 'dates' for Scotland expected in covid statement

The First Minister is expected to set out dates for lifting lockdown restrictions in the Scottish Parliament tomorrow.

Nicola Sturgeon has committed to laying out the Scottish Government's plan for reopening the economy, including retail and hospitality.

She's scheduled to make a statement at Holyrood updating the country on the route out of lockdown, exactly a week after she told MSPs: "Next week, I will set out a firmer indicative timetable for re-opening the economy, including shops, hospitality, hairdressers, gyms and parts of our tourism sector."

The move should give the country a clearer picture of how and when restrictions will be eased and take account of the latest infection and vaccination rates.

And it comes just days after minor changes were made to outdoor gathering rules and easing of restrictions to allow communal worship from Friday, March 26.

As it stands the Scottish Government aims to start reopening the economy from April 26, when it also hopes to reimpose the tiers systems, with most of the country expected to go straight into level 3.

But Ms Sturgeon indicated last week she won't rule out a quicker transition, if the science supports it.

She added: "If the data allows us to relax more restrictions more quickly than we have previously indicated, we will not hesitate to do so.

"I'm well aware of just how difficult continued restrictions are - and I know that they get harder rather than easier to bear, as time goes on.

"I also know - because I feel this too - that the progress on vaccination makes us even more impatient to reach the end of this ordeal as quickly as possible.

"But I am certain that easing restrictions too quickly would be a mistake that we would regret."

The statement will be made just days after public health expert Professor Linda Bauld told the BBC she expects life to return to near-normal in Scotland by mid-June.

She said: "If you look at the trajectory of progress we are making with more than a third of Scotland's population having their first dose of the vaccine and many others getting their second dose every day.

"Public health measures are getting the incidence and prevalence of the disease down. I would anticipate by the end of June, mid-June most things will be open.

"Much of the distancing and certainly things being closed, I'd be very optimistic that by the summer that would no longer be the case. It may even be for many things earlier than the summer."

Ms Sturgeon's statement will be heard in her covid briefing at Holyrood tomorrow afternoon.
