Nicola Sturgeon daily update: Six Scottish NHS staff and five care workers died from coronavirus

First Minister Nicola Sturgeon used her daily briefing to announce a "further group of deaths" - namely, the fact that six NHS staff workers and five social care workers have died from COVID-19.

She says her thoughts - and the thoughts of the wider Scottish government - are with their families and friends.

One of the NHS workers confirmed to have died from coronavirus is Kirsty Jones, from Lanarkshire. Kirsty Jones, 41, had been working as a healthcare assistant and had recently taken up a position in one of Lanarkshire’s Assessment Centres to help in the frontline response against the pandemic.

Nicola Sturgeon also said that it's an important point to stress that it's not necessarily the case that these staff contracted coronavirus through their work, and that some might have not been at work for some time, "however, it is really important to understand how many frontline workers lose their lives through this virus.

She has pledged to ensure "appropriate investigation" into the circumstances so that the government can learn lessons from what happened.

Ms Sturgeon also thanked the health and care workers of Scotland for the "extraordinary" work that they continue to do.
