Nicola Sturgeon covid update: Glasgow to remain in lockdown level 3 ahead of potential level 2 move next week

Glasgow will remain under Level 3 lockdown restrictions , although it could potentially move to Level 2 restrictions next week.

Nicola Sturgeon confirmed the news during her latest review into Scotland's Covid protection levels system this afternoon in Edinburgh.

The First Minister said that it would be "premature" to move Glasgow out of Level 3 this week "while the situation is so fragile", but said that, if the situation remains stable, the incident management team will support the city exiting level 3 at the end of next week.

A decision concerning Glasgow will be announced by next Wednesday, Ms Sturgeon confirmed.

She added that cases in the city were "uncomfortably high", noting that cases have continued to rise by about 30% from 112 to 146 per 100,000 per population, while case numbers in Scotland have increased by more than a quarter in past week.

The daily Covid-19 statistics revealed by Ms Sturgeon today also confirmed 641 new cases in Scotland - the largest daily number of cases since March 25, with 234 of these cases recorded in the NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde area and 104 in Lanarkshire.

Glasgow has been under strict covid measures for 270 days, and is the only part of Scotland under Level 3 lockdown rules, prohibiting non-essential travel out of the area and imposing greater restrictions on socialising, hospitality and businesses.
