Nicola Sturgeon covid travel ban announcement during Holyrood statement

The First Minister has backed away from putting a coronavirus travel ban into law for now.

However, Nicola Sturgeon warned she is continuing to prepare the guidelines that would put the move on a legal footing.

Under the current five tier system, restrictions on travelling from one council area to another amount to advice.

At a media briefing last week Sturgeon was asked if she is considering putting the travel advice into law to stop the spread of the virus. "Yes we are considering that," she said.

Addressing MSPs today, the First Minister stressed the importance of travel restrictions as part of a targeted approach to tackling covid 19.

She said the travel restrictions would not be turned into law at this point:

"These will remain in guidance over the next week but we continue to prepare the regulations, and resolve the practical issues, that would be required to put them into law.

"We will not hesitate to do that if we think that is necessary."
