Nicola Sturgeon Covid announcement survey: Tell us what you really think of the First Minister's update

Yesterday Nicola Sturgeon announced a raft of measures designed to protect Scots from the Omicron Covid threat over the Christmas period.

Scots have been urged to minimise household contacts from now and immediately after the Christmas period.

If people are meeting with other households, then they have been requested to limit gatherings to three households only.

Unlike last year, the measure on gatherings has not been made law and currently remains as advice only.

Hospitality venues and retail settings have also been ordered to step up their efforts to protect customers and workers during this spell.

Pubs and restaurants should now ramp up contact tracing measures and urge customers not to gather in great numbers around bars and entrances.

Shops will also be required to adopt social distancing measures and other mitigations - such as protective screens - over the coming days and weeks.

A previous request for Scots to work from home has also now become a legal requirement.

It comes after the emergence of the Omicron Covid variant in Scotland - which is said to be causing a recent surge in case numbers up and down the country.

The First Minister said that the reproductions rate - which is also known as the R number - of the variant could be as high as four.

Early evidence has also shown that the effectiveness of two doses of the Covid vaccines may drop when it comes up against Omicron.

It is hoped that the advice issued by Sturgeon will prevent legal restrictions being reimposed in the run up to the festive period.
