Nicola Sturgeon could make wearing face coverings in shops compulsory from next week

Scots taking advantage of shops reopening are being urged to wear a face covering to protect the health staff and other customers.

Face coverings are currently mandatory on public transport, including buses and trains, and Scots are "strongly advised" to wear them in enclosed spaces like shops.

Whilst face coverings are not yet mandatory in shops, First Minister Nicola Sturgeon may consider extending the rule next week, the Daily Record reported.

Non-essential retailers will be able to reopen from 29 June, providing they have outdoor exits and entrances. Indoor parts of shopping centres are expected to reopen on July 13.

Nicola Sturgeon has also asked Scots to treat shop workers with respect ahead of them welcoming customers back in store from Monday.

It came as she sported her own tartan face covering on a visit to a New Look store in Edinburgh.

She said “a bit of discomfort which none of us enjoy is preferable to getting [coronavirus] or passing it on to someone else”.

Whilst wearing a covering is not guaranteed to prevent someone catching the virus, it does reduce the chances of asymptomatic people from unintentionally spreading it.

The Scottish Government has said they are particularly important in enclosed spaces where physical distance may not always be possible.

Speaking about the reopening of shops, Sturgeon said: “All of us need to remain patient and polite. There are times when retail staff ask us to follow rules we are not used to but it is important for us to treat staff, and indeed our fellow customers, with respect.”

Nicola Sturgeon was visiting the New Look store to see the measures they had put in place to protect the health of customers and staff.

As well as social distancing, shops will quarantine goods touched but not purchased by customers for a number of days. Changing rooms will also be unavailable.

Sturgeon added: "I also want to stress there is a responsibility here on all of us as customers as well as on retailers.”

She added: “I want us all in the weeks ahead to support the retail sector, to support shops trying to get back to normal, but we must all shop responsibly.

“The experience of shopping is going to be a bit different, and there will be times when retail staff ask us to follow rules that haven’t previously been in place and it is vital that we listen to them and follow the advice they give and to treat them with respect.”
