Nicola Sturgeon coronavirus update: new restrictions on social gatherings expected today

First Minister Nicola Sturgeon is to consider introducing new restrictions on social gatherings in Scotland in an effort to halt the surge in coronavirus cases.

Scotland is to review lockdown measures this afternoon, but the First Minister has warned not to expect any major relaxations.

Nicola Sturgeon will announce later today if Scotland will follow the move by Boris Johnson and England to adopt a 'rule of six' as she urges people to download the new NHS Protect Scotland contact tracing app for mobile phones.

She has already warned her latest review was “likely to take a very cautious approach”.

England has made gatherings of more than six people illegal from 14 September and the UK government will also enforce a £100 penalty to people who break the rules, with fines of up to £3,200 given to multiple offenses.

More than one million Scots in and around Glasgow are under limited lockdown and not allowed to host other people in their households.

In other areas not subject to lockdown up to eight people from up to three households can currently meet indoors in Scotland.

Speaking on Wednesday, the First Minister said: “We can’t rule out the need to make changes to the number of people allowed to gather together like those that were announced for England.”

“We’re carefully reviewing existing guidance and regulation, as well as considering what new steps may be necessary to keep Covid under control.”

Nicola Sturgeon will make an official announcement at around 12.20pm today.
