Nicola Sturgeon coronavirus briefing: lowest weekly total of deaths since March but 47 new cases

Nicola Sturgeon has said there are 47 new confirmed cases of coronavirus in Scotland in the last 24 hours.

This figure represents 1 per cent of newly tested individuals and shows a drop when compared with an additional 52 new positive cases on Tuesday.

24 of the new cases are in the Grampian health board area, with Nicola Sturgeon confirming that lockdown restrictions are to remain in place in Aberdeen.

There are now 265 are in hospital - which is four fewer than yesterday - while three patients remain in intensive care as of last night with the virus.

According to Scottish Government figures, there have been zero reported deaths from the virus as of Tuesday.

It comes as the National Records of Scotland publish its weekly statistics of deaths linked to COVID-19.

As of Sunday (9 August), 4,213 deaths have been registered in Scotland where coronavirus is presumed on the death certificate, according to the NRS' statistics.

Five deaths in total were registered that mentioned COVID-19 on the death certificate between 3–9 August - which is a decrease of two from last week.

This is the lowest weekly total of deaths involving COVID-19 since the first death from the virus was recorded in March.

While Nicola Sturgeon said "every single loss of life is a source of grief" she said the NRS statistics reinforce that Scotland has driven to the virus to "really low levels".

However, the First Minister warned that the country cannot become complacent and said the outbreak in Aberdeen shows virus can still spread rapidly.
