Nicola Sturgeon considering tightening Christmas lockdown as fears grow over virus

Nicola Sturgeon is considering tightening the Christmas lockdown restrictions after fears the virus is spreading too fast.

Under the current UK-wide plans eight people from three households will be able to mix indoors between December 23 and 27.

However, government leaders across the UK are under pressure after public health and medical experts warned about the impact of the temporary easing.

Following a joint call from the British Medical Journal and Health Service Journal, the leaders of the devolved administrations and the UK Government agreed to discuss the changes today.

Sturgeon said leaders should look at "whether we tighten the flexibilities" both in terms of "duration and numbers of people meeting".

She said: "I will consider the views of the other nations. If we can come to a four nations agreement, I think that would be preferable. If that is not possible, then of course we will consider within the Scottish Government what is appropriate."

She added: “There will be a four-nations discussion later today to take stock of recent developments.

“But, for now, I would urge the utmost caution.

“If you can avoid mixing with other households over Christmas, especially indoors, please do.

“But if you feel it essential to do so – and we have tried to be pragmatic in recognising that some people will – then please reduce your unnecessary contacts as much as possible between now and then.”
