Nicola Sturgeon congratulates Joe Biden in pledge to build Scotland's friendship with America

Nicola Sturgeon promised to build on Scottish and American "bonds of friendship" as she congratulated President Joe Biden on taking office.

Scotland's first minister sent "warm congratulations" to Biden and his new vice president Kamala Harris moments after they were sworn in at Washington DC.

Sturgeon, in a statement, wrote: "Warm congratulations and best wishes to President Biden and Vice President Harris.

"Scotland and the USA share long-standing bonds of friendship and co-operation.

"We look forward to building on these in the years ahead."

Her message of support came a few hours after she offered ex president a curt "cheerio" and told him: "Don't haste ye back."

Sturgeon made those less friendly comments to MSPs in the Scottish Parliament shortly before the official inauguration ceremony.

Biden took his presidential oath vowing to preserve, protect and defend the Constitution of the United States in a heartfelt speech aimed at ending four years of turmoil.

Trump's term in office ended in chaos with an armed mob storming the historic Capitol.

The new President said political extremism and white supremacy had to be challenged. He added that he would put his "whole soul" in putting the UK back together.

"At this hour, my friends, democracy has prevailed," he said. "Today we celebrate the triumph, not of a candidate, but of a cause. The cause of democracy."
