Nicola Sturgeon confirms travel ban still applies in Tier 3 lockdown zones

Nicola Sturgeon has confirmed that a ban on travelling out of higher prevalence covid areas will continue.

The First Minister said the curbs mean that people cannot travel to do their Christmas shopping in Glasgow.

Introduced recently, the ban imposed an effective ban on people living in level three and four areas from travelling out of their council areas.

Some exemptions, such as for work, are in place.

Sturgeon today announced that some areas would move down from tier four to three, but travel restrictions would still apply.

She said: "Travel restrictions – which will remain in place - continue to be a vital part of keeping the country safe with a targeted and proportionate approach to restrictions.

"So nobody in a level 3 area, or until Friday a level 4 area, should travel outside their local authority area, except for very specific purposes. And no one should travel into level 3 or 4 areas unless for essential purposes."

She added: "I am afraid that means, for example, that people from outside Glasgow must not travel there to do Christmas shopping, when retail opens on Friday."

From Friday, level three areas will include City of Glasgow, Renfrewshire and East Renfrewshire, East and West Dunbartonshire, North and South Lanarkshire, East and South Ayrshire, Stirling and West Lothian.

Clackmannanshire, Dundee, Edinburgh, Fife, Midlothian, North Ayrshire, and Perth & Kinross are also in tier three.
