Nicola Sturgeon confirms seven new Covid deaths in Scotland amid 1,004 new cases

Nicola Sturgeon has confirmed seven coronavirus deaths overnight and a further 1,004 new positive cases.

The latest figures were announced this afternoon as the virus continues to spread across the country.

472 people are currently in hospital with 63 requiring intensive care as they battle the disease.

A total of 342,059 Scots have now caught coronavirus since the start of the pandemic with 7,866 deaths recorded.

While 4,000,658 people have now had their first dose of the vaccine and 3,108,928 have had their second.

It comes as Scotland's Covid case rate begins to fall dramatically after weeks of high numbers during the Euros, according to Professor Jason Leitch.

The National Clinical Director of the Scottish Government said it was positive news as the country moves towards August 9 and leaving the Levels system.

At the start of July Scotland had five out of the top 10 in terms of number of Covid cases in the UK, however there are now no local authorities in the top 150.

A significant coronavirus outbreak has also been announced at a Scots care home.

Dun Berisay Care Home, in Stornaway on the Isle of Lewis, has identified seven cases of Covid in both staff and residents.

Visiting at the home has now been suspended with test and protect now underway.

A special incident management team has now been set up to tackle the outbreak which includes NHS and council staff.
