Nicola Sturgeon confirms schools in Scotland will reopen on phased basis from Monday

Younger and older pupils will go back to school next week under plans confirmed by the First Minister.

Nicola Sturgeon told MSPs children in P1-P3 and some senior phase pupils will resume classroom learning from Monday.

Scotland has been in lockdown since before Christmas, with school closures for most pupils being part of the plan to drive down infection levels.

However, Sturgeon has repeatedly said a resumption of schooling is her priority and she recently suggested a phased return.

Parents, who have been juggling childcare and work, have been anxious to know if the plan would go ahead.

Addressing MSPs, Sturgeon confirmed that pre-school children and pupils in primaries 1, 2 and 3 would return from Monday.

She added that a limited number of senior phase students will also go back to the classroom

The First Minister also said she hoped to set out the second phase of school re-opening in two weeks’ time.

But in order to assess the impact of this limited reopening, Sturgeon said it was unlikely, at this stage, of any further return to school before 15 March.

Senior secondary pupils will also be required to observe two metre physical distancing in school and on school transport.

She told MSPs: "The evidence suggests that the key risk in re-opening schools isn’t transmission of the virus within schools - instead, the risk comes from the increased contact the re-opening sparks amongst the wider adult population.

"The risk is that schools going back leads to parents socialising more, at the school gates for example, or returning to the workplace rather than working from home.

"And so - although I do know how difficult this is - I am asking parents and employers to make sure this doesn’t happen."
