Nicola Sturgeon confirms level four lockdown will end in Scotland on Friday

Nicola Sturgeon has confirmed more than two million Scots will leave the highest level of coronavirus restrictions on Friday.

The First Minister said: "I can confirm that that remains the case, that will be the case."

Scotland has a five tier system of coronavirus restrictions and Sturgeon will announce her weekly review tomorrow.

Eleven council areas, including Glasgow and North and South Lanarkshire, have been in level four since last month. Curbs include pubs and restaurants being closed.

These areas are scheduled to come out of this tier on Friday, but Health Secretary Jeane Freeman yesterday sparked confusion after initially failing to rule out level four restrictions continuing.

Asked if those parts of the country in Level four would have the restrictions eased, she said: “Well, we will announce that on Tuesday, the First Minister will make a statement, Cabinet will discuss and reach a final decision on Tuesday morning.

“And right now, as is always the case in advance of these reviews, a great deal of work is going on, analysing the data, talking to colleagues in local authorities, taking senior clinical advice, all of which is designed to help us reach a judgment about what is the right thing to do and we’ll announce that on Tuesday.”

Freeman later tweeted a clarification: “11 local authorities currently in Level 4 will come out of that level on Friday.

“That position has not changed. The Cabinet will decide on Tuesday what level below 4 they’ll go into."

At her daily briefing, Sturgeon told journalists that her Government had "always" said the eleven local authorities would move out of this tier on Friday.

She added that it was "likely" these areas would be placed in level three.
