Nicola Sturgeon confirms hairdressers and shops reopening date in Scotland

Nicola Sturgeon has confirmed non-essential shops and hairdressers should be able to reopen their doors next month as Scotland emerges from its long winter lockdown.

The First Minister told MSPs today that a dramatic drop in the number of people being hospitalised with covid thanks to the success of the vaccination programme meant some restrictions could end.

From Monday, April 5 Scots will be able to visit hairdressers, barbers, garden centres, car showrooms and other non-essential retail stores.

It comes as the national "Stay at Home" message is due to end on Friday, April 2 - with travel restrictions across mainland Scotland ending by April 26.

Sturgeon told MSPs: "We expect to begin the phased re-opening of non essential retail on April 5.

"Click and collect retail services will be permitted to reopen from that date, along with homeware stores, and car showrooms and forecourts.

"Garden centres will also be able to reopen on April 5 – which I know is important as we head towards the summer.

"And last – but definitely not least – we expect hairdresser and barber salons to reopen for appointments on April 5".
