Nicola Sturgeon confirms Dumfries and Galloway new covid case

Eleven positive coronavirus cases have now confirmed in a cross-border cluster of infections.

The total increased by one overnight as health officials test and trace contacts in part of Dumfries and Galloway.

Scotland’s national clinical director, Jason Leitch, revealed the new figure during Nicola Sturgeon’s daily press briefing. He said 23 people were traced through the contact-tracing system.

“They have been spoken to, all offered testing, all been told to self-isolate and we believe they are all self-isolating,” he said.

He said testing is complete at two factories and a second day of testing is taking place at a Young’s factory. But he stressed there is only a contact connection with these businesses and there is no suggestion the outbreak started or spread there.

The cluster has been linked with a healthcare worker at the Cumberland Infirmary in Carlisle.

Coronavirus travel restrictions are not being lifted in the affected area, unlike the rest of Scotland where people can now travel more than five miles.

It affects communities in Annan, Gretna, Dumfries, Lockerbie, Langholm and Canonbie.

Residents there will not be able to cross the border this weekend to visit pubs in England, which are reopening on Saturday.

Mobile testing were sent to the area to help trace people who may have been infected, and visitors are not permitted to enter care homes in the area.
