Nicola Sturgeon confirms coronavirus spike with 77 new cases

Nicola Sturgeon confirmed there were 77 new coronavirus cases in Scotland in the past 24 hours.

This is the highest number of cases in one day for almost three months.

The new figures mean the total number of confirmed  Covid-19  cases across the country now stands at 19,534.

No new hospital death from a positive case was reported in the past 24 hours.

The First Minister made the announcement this afternoon before the Scottish Parliament

Patients currently being treated in hospital with the deadly virus  stands at 249, up one from yesterday, with two currently in intensive care.

The total number of Covid-19  deaths in Scotland remains at 2,492.

It was also announced that a pupil from  Carntyne Primary, Glasgow, has tested positive for the virus, while another case was identified at Wallace Primary School in Elderslie on Tuesday.

Nicola Sturgeon has stood by the Scottish Government's decision to have children back full-time across the country, citing the spread of the virus across communities as the cause of a recent bout of clusters, not school communities.

She stressed the number of school pupils across Scotland contracting  coronavirus  is 'inevitable'.

"We will inevitably I think see more cases which involve school pupils in the weeks and months ahead," she said.

Sturgeon also said the current situation in Aberdeen is improving with the number of cases continuing to fall, however she said it's "important to stress outbreak is not over”.
