Nicola Sturgeon confirms 57 coronavirus deaths in Scotland amid 685 new cases

Nicola Sturgeon has confirmed that 57 Scots have died from coronavirus in the last 24 hours.

The First Minister announced that a further 685 positive cases have been detected overnight, bringing the total to 194,954.

The Scottish death toll now stands at 6,885 since the start of the pandemic last March.

A total of 1,261 patients are currently being treated in hospital for the deadly virus with 95 in intensive care.

This week Nicola Sturgeon confirmed schools will start to open for younger children from February 22.

The phased return was confirmed for P1-3 in a "trade off" with lockdown across Scotland.

The country has endured seven gruelling weeks of lockdown since Christmas with non-essential shops shut, almost all hospitality businesses closed and a ban on travelling outwith local council areas.

Sturgeon said wider lockdown will carry on "possibly" into March.

Monday was the first day that international travellers arriving in Scotland must quarantine for 10 days in designated hotels.

Passengers entering the country must book and pay £1750 for managed isolation at one of six agreed hotels in advance of their arrival.

Food and beverages will be supplied by staff during the 10 day period.

All arrivals must also take two coronavirus tests on days two and eight of their hotel stay.
