Nicola Sturgeon confirms opening of 22 walk-in covid test centres in Scotland today

The first of 22 walk-in Covid testing centres is opening in Scotland today to ease growing pressure on the system.

The new facility, at Victory Memorial Hall in St Andrews, is designed to make testing more accessible and available after massive demand was registered after schools reopened.

Six of the facilities will be opened before the end of September in areas of high student population, the First Minister said, coinciding with the return of universities and colleges.

Nicola Sturgeon, at today's coronavirus briefing, said: "Today's opening is a first stage but an important first stage in developing walk through centres and making testing more accessible for people in different parts of the country."

Bookings are recommended for the testing centres, which can be done through the NHS Inform website.

However, there are concerns not enough is being done to prepare for another influx of overseas students.

On Wednesday, Scottish Liberal Democrat leader Willie Rennie - whose constituency covers St Andrews - said: "Intelligent young people are flocking to Scotland's universities from across the globe right now as they prepare to reopen. We have a duty to keep them safe while they're here.

"This will be one of the biggest movements of people since the lockdown began and the government should have been more prepared and proactive."

Sturgeon said international students must quarantine on arrival, rather rely on tests which might not register the virus at the time.
