Nicola Sturgeon is celebrating Scotland beating Serbia hailing the victory a 'lift for the country'.

The First Minister was left thrilled by the astonishing win after the Tartan Army grabbed their first major victory since 1998.

The Scotland team took the win for the UEFA Euro 2020 final playoff in a penalty shoot out.

Now Sturgeon is rejoicing with the rest of the country as she took to Twitter to share her delight.

The FM tweeted a GIF of herself celebrating and said: "Massive congratulations to Steve Clarke and the team.

"After 22 years, @ScotlandNT men are off to a major tournament.

"What a lift for the country. Well done!"

It comes after Ryan Christie had netted a goal earlier in the game but Serbia equalised in the last minute.

Scotland then clinched victory on penalties.

Steve Clarke 's side were one game away from immortality and ended a nightmare spell on the international scene.

Nicola shared her excitement after Christies goal tweeting a series of Scottish flags during the nail biting game and reminded the country to 'take deep breaths' as things got tense.

Earlier she sent rallying message on social media wishing manager Steve Clarke and his players 'the best of luck'.

Sturgeon reminded them Scots are 'willing them on' as they faced kick off this evening.
