Nicola Sturgeon calls on employers 'not to let staff anguish over decision to work from home'

The First Minister has called on employers to make decisions over whether staff should work from home rather than leaving employees to decide during the coronavirus lockdown.

Speaking at a press conference today Nicola Sturgeon asked businesses to consider whether their work was essential and contributes to fight against coronavirus.

She also reminded employers they are responsible for making the decision to send staff to work at home and employees 'should not be left to anguish over whether they should continue to go their place of work'.

It comes as two more people in Scotland have died after testing positive for Covid-19, taking the total to 16.

The number of cases has risen to 584.

Ms Sturgeon thanked businesses that have already closed or continued production from home but also urged premises that are not selling essential items like food and medicine to close.

She said construction sites should close unless they are involved in essential building ie building a hospital.

She also said self employed gardeners and window cleaners could continue to operate in the community as long as they follow social distancing guidelines.

Ms Sturgeon noted that if a business is contributing to the wellbeing of the nation she would encourage workers to keep going.
