Nicola Sturgeon calls for Boris Johnson to resign over Downing Street Christmas party scandal

Nicola Sturgeon has called on Boris Johnson to resign following the scandal surrounding the Christmas party said to have taken place in Downing Street last year during tight coronavirus lockdown restrictions.

The Prime Minister has been under pressure for the past week, and yesterday apologised.

However, he said in the Commons yesterday that he has been assured no party took place - although he has ordered the Cabinet Secretary to investigate the matter.

Footage released by ITV appeared to show Number 10 advisers joking about a Number 10 Christmas party during the lockdown.

Responding to a question by Green MSP Gillian Mackay about corruption, the First Minister said she believed that Mr Johnson should resign following the revelations.

Ms Mackay blasted the Prime Minister, saying "the UK Government does not respect the rules it laid down for others".

She continued: “Boris Johnson has jeopardised public compliance with covid measures. Does the First Minister agree with me that is it time for this corrupt Prime Minister to go?”

Ms Sturgeon responded: "Yes I do, Presiding Officer. While Gillian Mackay was asking her question there, I had members of the Tory group shouting at me from a sedentary position that these issues had nothing to do with us here in the Scottish Parliament. Well I beg to differ.

"I think the principles and the values of openness, integrity and transparency matter to all of us who care about democracy in this country.

“I think Boris Johnson has many questions to answer. There are more questions surfacing today around the whole Downing Street wallpaper issue but I’ll leave them to one side.

“I don’t think it is simply a corrupt incumbent of Number 10 that has to go. I think it’s time for Scotland to get rid of the whole broken, corrupt Westminster system that is holding us back. And we can only do that, presiding officer, by becoming an independent country.”
